Hank, My Soul Dog: Shaping My Journey in Quail Hunting in Arizona

Every passionate hunter knows there’s one dog that stands out above the rest—a soul dog that shapes your journey. For me, that dog is Hank, my nearly 13-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer. Together, we’ve embarked on a decade of adventure, learning, and unforgettable memories, especially in the rich landscapes of Arizona.

The Beginning of an Adventure

Our story began when my wife and I sought a new direction in life. She was going to nursing school, while I juggled HVAC work between fishing seasons. Feeling the need to create a life centered around our passions, we welcomed our first bird dog into our family. After researching various breeds, we found Ridgeday Kennels in Eastern Montana, where my wife picked up Hank on Valentine’s Day. Little did we know, this decision would lead us on an incredible journey.

Hank spent his early days exploring the beautiful terrains of Missoula, Montana, and Marble Canyon, Arizona. However, the most transformative moment came when we returned to Southern Arizona for quail hunting season. One snowy day, while scouting, I set Hank on the ground. Within moments, he locked onto a Mearns Quail covey, showcasing the extraordinary instincts that would define our partnership. I had encountered Gambel’s Quail and Ptarmigan during hunting trips with my daughter in Alaska, but the challenge of the Mearns was a revelation that sparked a new passion in me.

Hank’s Impact on My Quail Hunting Career

That day in the snow ignited a fire within me. I realized I wanted to guide others in experiencing the thrill of quail hunting in Arizona. We reshaped our lives to make this dream a reality, purchasing a home designed with Hank in mind—complete with fences, kennels, and a cozy fireplace for him to relax after long days in the field.

Hank became the center of our weekend adventures, whether we were scouting for Mearns Quail or bringing him along on our fishing trips. His presence enriched our family life and deepened my connection to Arizona’s diverse landscapes.

Building Connections Through Hunting

Hank has been more than just a hunting companion; he’s a bridge to incredible relationships and opportunities. Through him, I’ve met dedicated breeders, skilled field trailers, and everyday hunters at sportsman’s Warehouse. Each interaction has opened new pathways, leading to friendships I never could have anticipated.

The bonds we’ve formed extend beyond the hunting community. Hank taught me to appreciate the beauty of Arizona, reminding me of my roots and leading me to discover hidden gems in the vast open Arizona . We even named our only son after him, just like Indiana Jones and his beloved dog.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Quail Hunting

Though Hank is now retired, he still joins our family outings, effortlessly finding those Mearns Quail as he did in his youth. I’m endlessly grateful for the lessons he’s imparted and the journey we’ve shared. Hank has shepherded me to become a professional quail hunting guide in Arizona.

As a guide, my mission is to offer others the same unforgettable experiences I’ve enjoyed. Whether hunting Mearns Quail, Gambel’s Quail, or Scaled Quail in Arizona’s beautiful landscapes, I invite you to share in this adventure. Join me for a guided hunt and experience the thrill of the chase alongside a soul dog like Hank.
